The Journey: Tumultuous Times (Chinese: 信约:动荡的年代, also known as ''Tumultuous Times'') is the second season of MediaCorp Channel 8's nation-building trilogy, the previous being ''The Journey: A Voyage''. Production began on June 2014. It will begin on 24 November 2014 with a total of 30 episodes. It stars Shaun Chen, Romeo Tan, Andie Chen, Jeanette Aw, Felicia Chin, Carrie Wong and Chen Hanwei as the main casts of the series.〔(【引用サイトリンク】 url =http://entertainment.xin.msn.com/en/celebrity/buzz/asia/new-faces-new-characters-for-the-journey%E2%80%99s-sequel )〕 The series will be Channel 8's 2014 year-end blockbuster celebrating 51 years of television. It is also partly sponsored by the Media Development Authority of Singapore.
''The Journey: Tumultuous Times'' will depict the period of the Japanese Occupation where the adversity only served to strengthen the characters’ survival instinct. When the British colonialists returned, stirrings of dissent became more apparent about their right to rule. In this period of uncertainty, there were vastly different ideals about how independence could be achieved. Yet despite all odds, they pulled through and survived.
This is the story of 5 young people unraveled over a period of 20 years (1940-1965) spanning World War II and Independence. Like its predecessor, ''Tumultuous Times'' will be the second periodical drama to use CGI. Major events that will happen in the drama include the Japanese occupation of Singapore, Hock Lee bus riots, student demonstrations, and social tensions.
''The Journey'' will culminate in Singapore’s nation building celebrations in 2015 with The Journey: Our Homeland, in time for Singapore's 50th National Day.
==Plot==
In the wee hours of the morning on 8 Dec 1941, Japanese planes attacked Singapore by air under the cloak of the night. This is the beginning of the period of unrest in Singapore.
With the death of Zhang Tianying (Allen Chen) and Zhang Huiniang (Joanne Peh) during the Japanese Occupation, Zhang Min (Lieu Yanxi) and Zhang Jia (Damien Teo) planned to go to Ipoh to seek shelter at Hong Shi (Desmond Tan) and his wife Lin Yazi’s (Jeanette Aw) place. En route to Ipoh however, Zhang Min and Zhang Jia were separated and the latter was severely wounded. Zhang Min eventually reached Hong Shi and Yazi's house after 2 days, while her brother was missing.
After being rescued by Hu Weiren (Chen Hanwei), Zhang Jia acknowledged the latter as his father, with hope of seeking revenge for his father’s death. Growing up by Hu Weiren’s side, the intelligent and agile Hu Jia (Shaun Chen) learnt much about triads and shady dealings, and came into his own within a matter of years.
Anti-colonialism sentiments were high after World War II. Zhang Yan (Romeo Tan) and Hong Dangyong (Andie Chen), who were once close as brothers, drifted apart as both had different opinions on how Singapore should achieve independence. Dangyong joined the leftists, while Zhang Yan on the other hand, chose to join Lim Yew Hock’s government, seeking to wrestle for political power in a peaceful manner.
As Zhang Yan scaled the political ladder, he began to lose himself, starting to make merry with the powers that be, engaging in debauchery and taking bribes on the side. He was also in charge of revoking the license of the Association of Secondary Schools and taking action against students in September 1956. This pits Zhang Yan face-to-face against Dangyong and Hu Jia, and the tense situation is about to erupt any minute...
